    Phil and James Younghusband were in Bacolod practicing with other members of the Philippine national men’s football team when Keri, their ten-year-old sister, called them about their mother.

    “She was crying,” Phil described Keri during the phone conversation. “She was saying that mum’s not waking up.”

    Susan Placer-Younghusband, 49, passed away on Saturday evening due to a massive heart attack. The death came as a shock, because apart from having been diagnosed as a diabetic in her mid-30s, Susan did not have any other major health issues.

    Still reeling from the loss, the brothers could take comfort in sharing tender moments with their mother hours before her death.

    “I said ‘I love you’ to her around four hours before Keri’s call,” Phil shared.

    James, for his part, said that his mother even helped him pack for the trip to Bacolod.

    “Mum even put my clothes inside my bag,” he said.

    Biggest cheerleader

    For the Younghusbands, their mother was their biggest cheerleader. Phil described Susan as emotional, especially when watching the Azkals’ games. She would shout whenever she disagreed with calls made against the members of the team, especially her children.

    Despite the loss, the brothers said that their mother would want them to carry on with their careers.

    This means that their mothers’ death will not stop either of them from joining the Azkals in the Long Teng Cup at the end of the month. They are also expected to play in the team’s friendly matches against Nepal and Singapore in October.

    “She wants us to continue playing,” said James about his mother.

    Taking care of Keri

    The siblings lost their father, Philip James Younghusband, to cancer in 2004.

    Now orphaned, the Younghusbands have now only got one another to draw strength from. James, 25, and Phil, 24, now serve as Keri’s breadwinner.

    During conversation with the brothers, Keri couldn’t stop clinging and hugging Phil and James.

    “She’s a strong girl,” they said.

    Private affair

    No cameras were allowed inside the room where Susan’s remains lie at the Manila Memorial Park compound in Paranaque. Neither was her name in the list of wakes being held inside the Funeraria Paz building, a clear indication that the family wants a measure of privacy away from the public eye in their moment of grief.

    Like any other Filipino wake, it became a gathering of people that the brothers have encountered during their young footballing careers. Joining them to commiserate were fellow players, members of the media, and people who have done business with the brothers with their football academy and their commercial endorsements.

    Actress Angel Locsin, who’s reportedly romantically linked to Phil, was also present at the wake. She even helped distribute sandwiches to some visitors.

    Susan’s remains will be buried on Thursday at the Heritage Park in Fort Bonifacio, Taguig City.

    The final mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. at the Manila Memorial Park, followed by the interment.
